We are Studio Pianpian He and Max Harvey. Since 2015, our interdisciplinary design studio has worked in China and America, up and down the wall. We are mostly focused on making images in booming, declining, fluctuating and unsustainable economies. Our studio was founded in Hunan University, Hunan Province. After a brief time spent in the United States, we returned to Changsha, Hunan, where we worked for a period of 3 years. We presently work from Montreal (CAN) and Changsha (CN). In the past years, we have collaborated with curators, artists, writers, institution staff, students, coders and designers on a multitude of eclectic works with undefined boundaries. We mainly work within the cultural sector and to pinpoint specific mediums, we specialize in the design of art books, artists books, publications at large, identities, signage systems and web design. This website displays independent and commissioned works made in China or abroad. At work and at home, we communicate in French, English and/or Chinese.

Our studio sways between contemporary art and publicity, at this moment where the promotion and presentation of a work conflicts with its initial intentions, seemingly facing a dead end. Our design practice dissects on what, in our opinion, should be revealed or discarded in the final product, and we sometimes do so to avoid over-explanation. We also acknowledge that some things require over-explanation. We are sailing against usual patterns of effective promotion and fast consumption, thus, aiming at making modest but long-lasting design works, even collectibles. Such can only be attained by working in close collaboration with artists. With an emphasis on production, our focus is on book design, exhibition design, website design and visual identities. By designing books we create spaces for narratives that can be carried around town.

Max and Pianpian both graduated with an MFA from Yale School of Art, in 2012 and 2018, respectively. Max taught at the School of Design in Hunan University, the School of Visual Arts in Boston University and was appointed as an assistant professor in Hunan Normal University, Academy of Art in 2018. Pianpian was appointed visiting lecturer in SIVA Detao School of Design (Shanghai) in 2020.

We also offer printing management services, operating with companies in China. As brokers, we offer the liaison between Western companies and Chinese printing facilities. Our experience in printing makes us a good asset to produce printing of high quality at lower cost. We find pragmatic solutions that solve for printing quality and cost therefore we do not necessarily choose the lowest bidder. Nous sommes le studio Pianpian He et Max Harvey. Depuis 2015, notre studio de design interdisciplinaire a travaillé depuis la Chine et l’Amérique, à l’intérieur ou à l’extérieur du mur (et des murs). Nous sommes intéressés par la fabrication d’images dans des économies en plein essor, en déclin, des économies fluctuantes et/ou non pérennes. Notre studio a été fondé à l’université du Hunan (situé dans la province du même nom). Après un bref séjour aux États-Unis, nous y sommes retournés et nous y avons travaillé une fois de plus pour une période de 3 ans. Nous travaillons actuellement depuis Montréal (CAN) et Changsha (CN). Au cours des dernières années, nous avons collaboré avec des artistes, étudiants et designers sur une multitude de travaux éclectiques aux frontières indéfinies. Nous oeuvrons principalement dans le secteur culturel et (s’il y a nécessité de cibler des médiums spécifiques), nous nous spécialisons dans la conception de livres d’art, de livres d’artiste, de publications, d’identités visuelles, de signalétique et de conception web. Ce site web présente des travaux indépendants et des commandes réalisées en Chine, à Hong Kong ou aux États-Unis. Nous communiquons en français, en anglais et/ou en mandarin.

Notre studio oscille entre l’art contemporain et la publicité – ce moment où la promotion d’une œuvre entre en conflit avec ses intentions initiales, semblant faire face à une impasse. Notre pratique du design dissèque sur ce qui, à notre avis, devrait être révélé ou écarté dans le produit final, et nous le faisons parfois pour éviter une surexplication. Nous reconnaissons également que certaines choses nécessitent toutefois une surexplication. Nous naviguons à contre-courant des modèles habituels de promotion efficace et de consommation rapide et visons donc à réaliser des œuvres de design modestes mais durables, voire des objets à collectionner. Cet objectif ne peut être atteint qu’en travaillant en étroite collaboration avec des artistes. En mettant l’accent sur la production, nous nous concentrons sur le design de livres bien faits. En concevant des livres, mêlant textes et images, nous créons des espaces pour des récits qui peuvent être trimballés dans la ville.

Max et Pianpian ont tous deux obtenu un MFA de la Yale School of Art, respectivement en 2012 et 2018. Max a enseigné à l’école de design de l’Université du Hunan, à l’école d’arts visuels de l’Université de Boston et a été nommé professeur adjoint à l’Académie d’arts visuels de l’Université Normale du Hunan, en 2018. Pianpian a été nommé professeur invité à l'école de design SIVA Detao à Shanghai en 2020.

Nous proposons également un service de gestion de production imprimée, en opérant avec des entreprises en Chine. En tant que courtier, nous offrons la liaison entre les entreprises occidentales et les imprimeries chinoises. Notre expérience en matière d’impression fait de nous un bon atout pour produire des impressions de haute qualité à coût moindre. Nous établissons un équilibre entre la qualité et le coût de l’impression ; nous ne choisissons pas nécessairement le soumissionnaire le plus abordable.
